SAT's Information for Parents/Carers

Key Stage 1

National Curriculum Tests

Information for parents

of Year 2 children.

 2023

Teacher assessments will be given for

English, Mathematics and Science

…but…

PLEASE CELEBRATE all areas of progress and achievement ~ social, physical, emotional, spiritual and creative development.

WHAT ARE KEY STAGE 1 TESTS AND WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

  • The end of KS1 assessments are Teacher Assessments, supported by the National Curriculum tests.

HOW AND WHEN ARE THE TESTS CARRIED OUT?

  • The tests are in addition to normal on-going Teacher Assessments.

  • They are taken during the month of May, but they do not take up all the time in school.  Normal activities take place as well.

  • Please ensure that your child is absent from school as little as possible during this time.  It is organisationally challenging to re-run a task for only one or two children and it takes the teacher away from the rest of the class.

WHO ADMINISTERS THE TESTS?

  • All tests are administered by the teachers who know the children.

  • Outside Moderators may visit to see that we award the correct standards to pupils.

WILL MY CHILD KNOW THAT SHE/HE IS BEING TESTED OR ASSESSED?

  • No – not from anything we say. We call the activities “special jobs” or “challenges”.

  • The children will not do their best if they are under pressure inappropriate to their age.

  • Teachers strive to ensure that all tasks are carried out within the normal positive school atmosphere.

WHAT WILL I BE TOLD?

  • You will receive the Teacher Assessment levels awarded to your child at the end of the Summer Term.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS BY THE END OF YEAR 2?

  • Your child will achieve one of the following levels in Mathematics and English:

Pre-Key Stage 1 (working below the test standard)

Working Towards the Expected Standard (below national expectations for a 7 year old pupil)

Working at the Expected Standard (in line with national expectations for a 7 year old pupil)

Working at Greater Depth within the Expected Standard (where a child shows a depth of learning within the KS1 Curriculum)

  • Nationally all children are expected to be working at the Expected Standard by the end of KS1 as it represents average achievement for Year 2 pupils.

SHOULD PARENTS TELL THEIR CHILD WHAT OUTCOMES THEY ACHIEVED?

  • The children are not told their outcomes by us and parents are the only people who can decide for themselves if their child would benefit from knowing the standards achieved. Some children might be encouraged by knowledge of the outcome, others might be demoralised and discouraged.

  • This is a sensitive decision which only you can make.

  • Knowing that you have done well by doing your best is, perhaps, the encouraging thing to know at six or seven years old.

KS1 SATs Information for Parents

Please see the table below for SATs information for parents regarding the KS1 SATs tests that will take place throughout May 2023. It is extremely important to emphasise, how this is a very relaxed process and woven into the class daily routine, in order to be as stress free as possible.
